Training for Supervisors

Leadership Academy is Western's new Supervisor series. This required training has been developed to ensure that supervisors have the skills to address Western’s strategic priorities, while providing early access and reference to resources, and allowing for uniformity in adherence to mandatory training and compliance issues. 

This new training program has replaced STAR (Supervisor Training and Resources). Individuals who have previously started the STAR series will be given an opportunity to finish. The new Leadership Academy will take a similar time commitment as the old program.  It will be more specifically framed as supervisor orientation. Attendance in the first quarter of employment as a supervisor will now be tracked centrally. The new Leadership Academy will consist of the following three parts:

Leadership Academy Quick Start

This self-paced Canvas course will provide the procedural information you need to manage day-to-day tasks as a supervisor. Topics include Payroll, Labor Relations, Hiring, FMLA/Disability, and Performance Evaluations.

Leadership Academy Cohort

Learn alongside other new supervisors in a skill building 4 weeks of two 1-2 hour sessions per week.

Based on the success of Leader as Coach to provide advanced leadership skills in a cohort-based format, we have now created a foundational leadership development program, WWU’s Leadership Academy Cohort. This four-week cohort learning experience will equip newly hired and newly promoted leaders on this campus to build and lead inclusive teams and be effective working within our institutional setting.

Risk and Compliance Training

A self-paced training designed by Risk, Compliance and Policy Services. Topics include ethics, FERPA, sexual harassment and violence prevention, and public records requests.
